Grow Dahlias: A Vibrant Summer Delight

In the springtime, when the ground is warm enough for your vegetable gardens, it's the perfect time to plant dahlia tubers. These stunning flowers thrive in full sun, requiring 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, and will reward you with a season-long display of blooms.

The more you cut the dahlia plants, the more they will flourish, providing you with an abundance of colorful flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and properly treated. However, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to growing dahlias. As farmers, we adjust our methods each year to ensure a flourishing crop, and you'll need to do the same.

Mother Nature's changing patterns have brought hotter and drier summers to the Pacific Northwest, where we now need to water our dahlias more deeply and frequently, along with adding more fertilizer throughout the growing season. These adaptations are essential for achieving a successful dahlia harvest, even in the face of shifting environmental conditions.

Dahlia seeds should be sown and covered with a layer of vermiculite. At temperatures between 21-23 Celsius, the seeds will germinate in 5-7 days. When planting, smaller dahlia varieties should be spaced at least 12 inches apart, while larger varieties may need up to 3 feet of space to allow for proper air circulation.

Once the dahlias have sprouted, they should be watered once or twice a week, ensuring that the large tubers, which may be planted up to six inches deep, receive a thorough soaking. This deep watering is essential for their healthy growth and development.
